At Quit Smoking in 60 Minutes a lot of people come to see us in our Capalaba offices to quit smoking.
It’s when I ask the question of what do you get from smoking that I get some very common excuses. In the persons mind these are valid excuses but at the end of the day these excuses if not addressed can keep someone smoking. Here are some of the most common excuses:
• It’s a crutch, something that is always there for me. If someone were to come to you and say “I’ve got this great deal for you. The deal is that I get everything and you get nothing”. Would you enter into this deal? The answer is of course no. Unfortunately this is the deal that you have for smoking. For the benefits that you perceive that you get the payment is that you will die early and your chances of cancer, heart disease and many of the other diseases associated with smoking go sky high. Not a very fair deal. Let’s face it; it’s only a fair deal if both parties get what they want.
• Smoking is my friend. My answer to this is would you make friends with someone that will surely but slowly kill you? Again the answer is no! Smoking cigarettes is that type of friend.
So before you come to quit smoking ask yourself what do you get from smoking and what is the price that you pay? Once you see the unfairness of this it makes it so much easier to quit smoking.
